Minecraft is some sort of game which I'm not entirely sure as to how to categorize it. Maybe some of you have heard of it before, but never gave it a try. However, Minecraft is unique in its design that you will notice that everything in the game is extremely blocky. And I mean blocky. Pixel blocks blocky. Imagine 8-bit graphics in 3D. But despite this, that is part of the charm.
The game is in an Alpha stage right now and you have the choice between one of two products: The free, shitty version or the awesome awesome $13 dollar download game. Go for the download.
The gameplay is this: You randomly appear in the middle of nowhere (and like the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, everywhere is nowhere in this game) and you have to build yourself a home and dig for rare materials.
For the most part.
The fact is, you don't have to do it if you don't want to, but that would take away one of the best components of the game. The beginning is very rough because you have absolutely nothing and you have to gather materials quick and find a place to hide out for the night. Why? Because at night, block zombies and skeletons with bows and exploding Creepers and shit like that come out to try to kill you. And if you die... well, you drop all the times you were holding and get sent back to your respawn spot. The respawn spot is where you first started the game and you will always come back here when you die.
When you eventually get settled in to your area, you can start exploring the world around you. And the world is fucking huge. You want to go climb a mountain? Go climb a mountain the size of Mt. Everest. Want to see what's over the horizon? Go on ahead because you will keep going and going for miles. Want to dig underground for as long as you can? You can dig for about seven fucking miles straight down, but be careful of lava patches.
Since you start out with nothing, let me further note that there are now towns or other people in this game. You head out and everything you do has to be by hand. Like for me, when I started playing, I decided to build my base into the side of a mountain. It was a tall mountain and it was very uneven. But after so of my life's hours wasted, carved out the side of the mountain, gave myself a private little field where I can raiseand slaughter my animals, and so on. Here's a picture.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: You have to craft stuff in this game. A tip for the start is you'll want to create a Crafting Table. To do this, you need four refined Wood Blocks. To get the refined Wood Blocks, you first harvest wood from trees. Then in your item sub-screen, you put the wood blocks in one of the Four Square crafting blocks. You'll figure it out eventually. Also, mine for coal and make sticks ASAP. Even if you have a nice little base, that won't mean anything without sticks and coal to make touches. Zombies and such spawn in dark areas and if there are no tourches to light up an area, they could spawn right next to you.
So, give the game a try. It might be kinda stupid, but if you get hooked, you're never going to leave your house again. Oh, and one last thing: The game has almost no music to it, so find something to listen to while you play. I myself listen to selected songs from Twilight Princess as I play since it is rather fitting: Especially the Hyrule Field night theme when it gets dark.
Current Project:
I recently made a compass that always points to my respawn point. I've died a few times and I always noticed that I have trouble getting around this blocky world. My base isn't far from my respawn point, but I never actually knew which direction it was nor where I respawned at. So, I'm actually building a walled road from my base to my respawn point. This way, if I were to die and respawn during night time, I'll not only make it back to my base, but do so without any threat of attack.
Finished that a while ago. Now my new project is to create and underwater tunnel system out of glass! Why? BECAUSE I CAN AND IT LOOKS COOL.
