Some stores, such as EB Games and Game Stop, will let you put a down payment onto the game and so when it's released on the first day, they'll have a copy of it just for you. You then pay the rest of the game price when you get it. Places like Wal-Mart and Target I'm pretty sure they don't do reserves.

Earlier today I reserved a copy of Diamond at the local EB-Games. I managed to cover it up by getting KH at the same time. I was trying to be sneaky.
