Account Activations

Sorry everyone, but if you are a member who is regularly logged in and you can't seem to login anymore, allow me to explain.

Apparently from anywhere between the past 2-3 hours, we got a new member by the name of "ubuywow". If you saw all the posts this member made, they're all habits of a spam bot. I banned the... individual once I saw this happening. But my internet is still running damn slow, so I'm not going around to delete and lock topics and crap.

Still, quite a problem now... if we have spam bots able to actually create accounts and advertise their crap everywhere that guests can't, then it's just going to cause me a major headache. So in an attempt to stop anymore spam bots creating accounts, I enable the forum's account activation.

Some of you I do know haven't activated your accounts yet. I was pretty good about this where you don't have to activate your account to start posting right away... but like I mentioned with a spam bot getting a membership here, it's back up.

Now... if you want your account activated, try looking for an automatic e-mail sent to you whenever you first joined. If you still have it, then it'll have the activation code in it. If you deleted it, try logging into your account and have it send some sort of reminder activation code.

And for this process, yes, you need a real e-mail address. If you have an e-mail address that was made up, try getting an account with either Yahoo or Hotmail. They're both free to set up an e-mail account with...

An account activation actually sounds more like a good thing than a bad thing. It only takes about a minute to do so. I had thought at first your were going to have it so that the staff had to approve an account before one could activate an account. The former is an annoyance but another good way to keep spam bots away. One spam bot, however wasn't too bad. If it was an invasion of 100 new accounts all spamming.. ho boy that wouldn't have been pretty at all.

Yeah, and what I don't like is how these things are starting to get around the anti-spam bot code I have in parts of the forum where guests are able to post. And if we get, like you saiud, a spam bot invasion...

You can set it to Op-Out e-mails in your profile settings. That's what I did.

Not like I really send a whole lot of e-mails anyway. Probably in the entire history since I had RTC up, I sent, like, two e-mails. >_>
