There's a personality test that you have to take at the begining of the game that determins what Pokémon you become.
But you get to choose your partner, however.

yea i know , i choose squirtle but i wasnt sure which 1 was the best
oh and also how do i get more ppl on my team other than torchy the torchic??

Once you gain access to "Friend Areas", sometimes when yuo defeat an opponent, they'll want to join your team.
However, you're first new recruit will be a Magnimite.

Hey, I've gone into far more dungeons than that, so don't you worry about it. Be sure you take Oran berries with you and you should be fine.

You have to beat the Pokémon before they can join your team. But you probably don't have any friend areas yet.
