No, that's a false rumor. I tried that years ago and it didn't work.

Although, there is a glitch that'll let you catch Mew. Simply go over to google and type in "Mew Trick".

you need to go to celadon, move through the underground tunnel to lavander, then exit, after that, walk 1 space below, INMEDATELY press start (if the trainer sees you BEFORE the menu opens, you've failed), use fly to cerulean (the trainer will see you, come to you but you will flee flying), then cross the nugget bridge, then beat the kid that has a slopoke in lvl 14 (HE MUST WALK TO YOU, IF YOU WALK EXACTLY INFRONT OF HIM, THE GAME WILL CRASH), then fly to lavander, exit to your left and the start menu will pop up. Then, just press B and catch mew.


Note this works with EVERY trainer in the game to obtain different Pokémon and this can be used to get Mewtwo before defeating Blue in the Pkmn league
